Opportunities for the LISSA Professional Development Reimbursement Fund
What is the LISSA Professional Development Reimbursement Fund?
The PDRF helps to offset the costs of attending extracurricular LIS-related events, such as conferences, workshops, etc. You are eligible to receive back 75% of personal expenses for these events, not to exceed $300, per fiscal year.
Where can I find information, forms, etc. about PDRF?
What ways can I take advantage of this opportunity?

Check the websites of professional organizations (see above) for workshops and webinars. Also, here are some professional institutions that offer educational programming:
Northeast Document Conservation Center

This is, by no means, a comprehensive list. There are so many great opportunities out there for professional development. LISSA’s PDRF wiki, as well as other student groups on campus, have great ideas for others.
First Panopticon Meeting
Thanks to all those who could make it! If you weren’t able to, here’s a recap of important things to know for the fall semester:
Tours
The first is at the W. Van Alan Clark Jr. Library at the SMFA. Check out our invite here.
In October, we will be touring the Harvard Film Archive, where we will be shown a screening and meet with the archivists and conservators. In November, our tour will be held at the Photographic Resource Center at BU. We will get a tour of their gallery space, as well as the library. We will post the dates and invites for these events 2-3 weeks before they occur, so look out for those.
Career Panel
On 8 November, from 5:30 to 7 pm, we will be holding a career panel with art, visual resource, and cultural heritage information professionals.
Art Exhibition
If you haven’t heard, which I hope is not the case, we are co-hosting an art exhibition with the GSLIS Tech Lab. The opening reception for the event will be Thursday, 13 October, from 5 to 6 pm in the Tech Lab. We are all very excited about it, and hope that you will consider participating. If you would like more info, see our blog post on the event here.
Professional Organizations
We encourage you to consider joining a professional organization, such as ARLIS/NA, VRA, or AMIA. (These are a few aligned to Panopticon’s mission, but there are many other wonderful organizations.) While Panopticon strives to support you in all your academic and professional endeavors, a professional organization allows for you to foster important connections with individuals who will soon be your colleagues, discuss the practical aspects of the profession, as well as the current trends. There are also other really cool benefits, such as:
- Subscription to the professional journal
- Opportunities to apply for awards, provided by the organization
- Ability to participate in committees and mentorship programs
- Discounts on conference registrations and continuing education workshops
- And, for some, discounts on books the organization publishes
Want to get involved?
We are looking to add some features on the website, host guest blog posts, and will be creating a working group on the ArLiSNAP alliance. So, if any of these sound interesting and you’d like to be more involved with Panopticon, please email us and let us know.
Art Exhibition with the GSLIS Tech Lab
The above image is from Panopticon’s Tech Lab Exhibition from January 2009: John Rodzvilla, LPs: Growth Series, ink and paint on vinyl.
Members of the Simmons GSLIS Community:
Panopticon is seeking submissions from students, alumni, faculty, and staff for the 2011-2012 art exhibition, which will be held at the GSLIS Tech Lab. It is our goal to showcase the diversity of talent within the GSLIS community, whether in arts or crafts or through academic posters about art, visual resources and cultural heritage in libraries, archives, and museums. We are excited to have the GSLIS Tech Lab as our co-host in making the Tech Lab a space for self/communal engagement.
To launch the exhibition, we invite you to the opening reception, to be held on 13 October 2011 from 5 pm to 6 pm. We hope you are able to join us for food, mingling, and discussions surrounding the exhibition, so please mark your calendars!
Please find the guidelines for the exhibition here. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us at panopticon@simmons.edu.
